Statistics showed that in 2020 alone, Nigeria lost $1.26 million just from importing quicklime and the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) started a project on quicklime to save Nigeria from further losses. BINTA SHAMA Reports.

About quicklime

A study has shown that calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as quicklime or quicklime, is a widely used chemical compound. It is described as a white, caustic, alkaline, crystalline solid at room temperature. The widely used term “lime” refers to inorganic calcium-containing materials, in which carbonates, oxides and hydroxides of calcium, silicon, magnesium, aluminum and iron predominate. In contrast, quicklime applies specifically to the single chemical compound calcium oxide. Calcium oxide that survives processing without reacting in building products such as cement is called free lime.

Use and production of quicklime

Quicklime has a wide range of uses, including in iron and steel production, paper and pulp production, water and flue gas treatment, and in the mining industry.

For the iron and steel industry, there are different supplies of reactive lime fractions burnt in a shaft kiln and lime burnt in a rotary kiln. On the other hand, quicklime is said to be produced by heating crushed limestone to around 1,100 degrees Celsius in a shaft kiln or rotary kiln. Heating limestone releases carbon dioxide, leaving calcium oxide (CaCO3 produces CaO + CO2). After heating, the quicklime is crushed and then crushed to the appropriate fraction.

Another use for quicklime is as a method of quick and anonymous disposal of a body. Usually the body is stretched out on a tarp or placed in a grave, then to prevent it from smelling and to hasten the decomposition, it is covered with quicklime. Another advantage of its use is in the field of agriculture. It is said that, if the soil is acidic and unsuitable for agriculture, the farmer can treat it with quicklime, slaked lime or chalk to neutralize the acidity. Quicklime, slaked lime and chalk are basic in nature. Farmers usually use quicklime, slaked lime or chalk in order to increase fertility and also when the soil becomes too acidic for many of the reasons they use these bases. These bases act as a neutralizing agent that neutralizes the acid content of the soil. Here, the reaction will be a neutralization reaction.

Plant growth can be severely hampered by too acidic soil. This is particularly important when nitrogen fertilizers form acids. As nitrogen fertilizers are used to produce more food, soils become increasingly acidic. Soils that are too acidic can cause several problems. Many forage plants, such as alfalfa, have specific soil acidity tolerances (measured in pH) for productive growth, but as acids increase, soil pH drops and growth is hampered. Nitrogen fixation is also impaired in very acidic soils. Acidic soils have a low inclination and are poorly aggregated. Other nutrients are not as available to plants. The concentration of soluble metals in the soil can become toxic. There may be a calcium deficiency. Lime is used to reduce acids and make the soil more alkaline.

Import of quicklime

According to the United Nations COMTRADE International Trade Database, that Nigeria imports from Spain quicklime, slaked limehydraulic lime (other than calcium oxide, hydroxide) was US$1.26 million in 2020. However, the Council is working wisely to ensure that the nation does not lose as much money to the import in order to increase the gross domestic production (GDP) of the nation and the economy in general.

RMRDC wins the best general classification via quicklime

Consecutively, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) again stood out among many other research institutes under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (FMSTI), in the category of research institutes, thanks to its “pilot plant”. for the production of hydrated lime also known as QUICKLIME (as mentioned above).

Speaking to reporters at the closing ceremony, the Managing Director of the Commodities Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Hussain Doko Ibrahim said the council was working tirelessly to achieve its mandate at the support of the goals of the current administration and that only through prayer, consistency and hard work can a person or organization be recognized for their positive efforts again and again based on merit. “I owe everything to Almighty Allah and my team.”

Speaking further, Prof. Ibrahim said that Nigeria with plenty of raw materials and the diversification of the current administration has made the RMRDC more passionate to see this dream come true and bring Nigeria into global competitiveness.

“All the policies put in place by the federal government have made very important contributions to national development and this has contributed enormously to making our economy a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy, unlike the previous situation where the economy was almost dependent on commodities.. For a nation to become economically independent, it will first and foremost have to develop the necessary capabilities in raw materials which the Almighty has blessed us with cheaply, which in the real meaning is a step back between underdeveloped nations and developing nations.And our ability to converge our raw materials into products and services, we must look inward by improving our raw materials, adopting our indigenous inventions , reduce imports and further increase exports and derive revenue from other nations.Thus, increase the GDP of the country s,” added the general manager.

Welcome for start-ups

Earlier, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (FMSTI), Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said that due to advancements in STI, the country has become a hotbed for start-ups, as the technology has been transferred to many micro, small and large enterprises in the country. Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
