‘SoHo Karen’ appears in virtual hearing after arrest in Ventura County
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif .– A 22-year-old woman who was filmed attacking a 14-year-old boy after falsely accusing him of stealing his phone – which she left in an Uber – appeared before a judge during a court hearing virtual audience.
Miya Ponsetto, known to many on social media as “SoHo Karen,” faces four felony charges in New York City, where the incident took place.
Ponsetto left New York after police asked the public for help in locating her. The young woman is from Simi Valley and detectives from New York have followed her to Southern California.
Ultimately, she was arrested Thursday in the Ventura County community of Piru. She led the authorities in a brief chase, ending in front of her home. She refused to get out of the car, but the police eventually pulled her out and handcuffed her.
Ponsetto made his virtual court appearance on Friday via Zoom. She agreed to return to New York to face the charges.
Before heading east, a judge must also consider that Ponsetto was supposed to appear in court on a completely different case.
In October, she was arrested near Moorpark on allegations of impaired driving. She had previously argued no contest over a separate impaired driving incident in Los Angeles County in March 2020.
Also in 2020, Ponsetto and his mother were both arrested by police in Beverly Hills at the Peninsula Hotel. The mother has been accused of assaulting a police officer and Ponsetto is accused of public drunkenness.
All of these issues will be put aside, as the four New York felony charges should take precedence. She is expected to be extradited to New York within the next week.
