We have to admit this is a critical time for UK food shoppers – and not just because of Russia. According to market researchers Kantar, food price inflation reached 4.3% in February. Apart from the start of the pandemic, it is the highest since September 2013.

The biggest increases are in snack foods (13.6%), beef (12%) and cat food (11%), but while there are usually price drops to balance them out, says Fraser McKevitt , a retail analyst at Kantar, “what’s going on right now is…there are price hikes on pretty much everything you could buy.

Official figures show Britain imports nearly half of its food, but food analysts believe the real figure could be up to 80%, since any food processed in the UK is believed to be produced here, even though the ingredients may have been imported. Growing more on our own makes sense, with concerns about climate change and food security being higher than ever. Resilience – even if it costs a bit more – is the best weapon we have.

We have imported more than 15,000 tons of California almonds in 2020 – yet the water and pesticides used in cultivation in the drought-stricken state, where 80% of the world harvest is cultivated, worry environmentalists. Palestinian almonds ( is a good brand) are grown without irrigation, which makes them much less damaging to the environment, and they have less than half the way to go than these California nuts.
