Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that spending money on the transfer market does not guarantee a team an automatic position to win the Champions League.

He made this known against the backdrop of City’s inability to reach the Champions League final.

Guardiola led Manchester City to the semi-finals of the competition this season, but they bizarrely crashed out against Real Madrid in Spain and are still licking their wounds.

City found themselves 5-3 on aggregate before the 90th minute at the Bernabeu but conspired to concede twice in added time and then lost 6-5 to the La Liga title winners.

In a press conference on Saturday, the Spanish tactician said it was not money that allowed people to win the competition, let alone qualify for it.

“I know people here are obsessed with the Champions League.

“The day we win, I’m sure they’ll say it’s because we spent so much money, not for the work behind it.

“For me it’s not about the money and the fans don’t understand that. Roma also spent a lot of money but they’re not in the Champions League.

Recall that Guardiola has failed in many attempts to win the Champions League for Manchester City like he did at Barcelona. He also couldn’t win the trophy in Germany with Bayern Munich.
